Sony has launched a new translucent mirror option in their Alpha range of interchangeable lens cameras. Boasting a new autofocus system and greater ISO sensitivity, will the Sony a77 II become the king of APS-C cameras? We look back at its predecessor, the Sony a77, and consider recent Sony sensor scores, to help us decide.
The number of APS-C semi-professional cameras remains remarkably small, with the Sony A77 II being one of the most well-rounded models in both sensor performance and features. The body is only half the equation, of course, with lens choice being an equally important consideration, maybe even more so. We’ve analyzed the results of nearly 50 lenses altogether, comprising 20 different primes and 28 zooms, including wide-angle, standard, and telephoto models.

The long awaited sequel to 2011's A77, the A77 II is a solid improvements all round, including superb AF.
With the 2014 World Cup in Brazil approaching, this is the time manufacturers with serious interests in professional sports start revealing new cameras and lenses to selected press agencies. Both Canon and Nikon are rumored to be fielding prototype professional-level APS-C bodies during the tournament for testing. However, rival Sony appears to have stolen a march by introducing the SLT Alpha 77 II ahead of the games.
The Sony SLT-A77 II is - as the name implies - an overhaul of the original A77, from from 2011. The A77 Mark II features a new autofocus sensor, and it's much more than a refreshed version of an existing design. Instead the A77 II is built around the AF module with the most focus points of any camera on the market (79), covering an extremely wide area of the frame. It's also rated to work in lighting as low as -2EV. That doesn't necessarily make it quite as sophisticated at pro-grade DSLRs, since they have more cross and diagonal sensor elements, but it looks very impressive for a camera in this part of the market.
After a four-year wait, Sony has returned to the enthusiast/semi-pro end of the DSLR market. Having made little impact in that market with the A700 that very closely resembled the conventional DSLRs made by Canon and Nikon, Sony has spent the intervening time developing something a bit different. The A77 builds on the company's 'translucent mirror' technology, and uses an electronic rather than optical viewfinder. The final result is a product that may look traditional, but is able to promise the unconventional.
