Sony has added NFC and a power zoom lens ring to the existing NEX-5R, but is it enough of a change?
Sony's NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras certainly boast the features to get any camera nerd excited -- interchangeable lenses in a form factor smaller than Micro Four Thirds but with an image sensor 50% bigger -- but the big question remaining is how they'll actually hold up in use.
The Sony NEX-5R is a top-notch interchangeable lens camera that offers good performance and lots of features. Just watch out for the slow autofocus, confusing menus, and a bizarre approach to downloadable apps.

The NEX 5R has quite a bit to live up to. We previously reviewed its predecessor: the NEX 5N and nearly fell in love with the camera's image quality and small size. Indeed, Sony did an excellent job with the camera as both enthusiasts, semi-professionals and professionals in the case of the BBC picked it up. With all of this said, does the NEX 5R have what it takes to dethrone its older ancestor?
A distinctively-styled, ultra-compact, interchangeable-lens camera that can record Full HD video clips with stereo soundtracks.Although Sony claims its new NEX-5 as the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable-lens camera, this can only apply to the camera body itself, which is similar in size and shape to Sony's H-series digicams. Attach the low-profile E 16mm f/2.8 (SEL16F28) 'pancake' lens and the camera remains just pocketable; fit the E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 (SEL1855) zoom lens and you'd be hard pressed to get the camera into a jacket pocket.
