  • very quiet and very fast
  • 100-300 is built substantially better and is a lot more solid
  • pretty sharp and at 300 with a tripod it is very good too

  • outer construction does still rely on lots of plastic

Canon EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 USM

Pros

  • very quiet and very fast
  • 100-300 is built substantially better and is a lot more solid
  • pretty sharp and at 300 with a tripod it is very good too
  • the lens performs very well indeed

Cons

  • outer construction does still rely on lots of plastic
  • the lens is VERY prone to zoom creep
  • corner softness
  • while just notable on a subframe body
  • Contrast & detail are disappointing
  • image quality is pretty sad
  • the lens does not change length or rotate during focusing
  • Poor image quality at 200mm to 300mm
  • Mine has survived some knocks and some light rain
  • It does not store any personal data
  • the manual focus is a bit fiddly
