It may not look like much at first, but the Canon PowerShot S95 is a special compact camera.
We review Canon's PowerShot S95 point-and-shoot camera updates the critically acclaimed S90 with 720p video and more.
The PowerShot S95 is an excellent compact camera that will complement any photographer's arsenal, provided you don't need super-fast performance specs.
All three of these cameras share a similar design philosophy, being relatively small and compact while offering a high level of manual control. All are built to a high-quality, and all three boast high-end lenses with relatively fast aperture, stabilized lenses. Although all three also offer 10MP CCD sensors, the LX5's sensor is multi-aspect, which means that its 3:2, 16:9 and square format shooting modes do not take a serious bite into the effective resolution, making them arguably more useful than they might otherwise be. This is especially true of the 16:9 mode, which at 9.5Mp offers roughly 25% greater pixel coverage than either the S95 or P7000 in the same aspect ratio. They also all offer the same (diagonal) angle of view at any given lens position (see exmple below).
At first the Canon PowerShot S95 seems to be just another point-and-shooter: compact, all black and stylish. Then a quick glance over the specs and external controls leads you to think otherwise. Canon Powershot S95 Features The CCD has 10.0 megapixels; the lens is a fast f2 zoom that has a range from 28-105mm as
When Canon revived its PowerShot S range with the S90 in August 2009, it was in acknowledgement of a clear demand from enthusiast photographers for high quality yet pocketable cameras offering extensive manual control. The S95, which followed almost exactly a year later, stuck with much the same formula - a relatively large sensor (at least in compact camera terms), a 28-105mm equivalent zoom lens with a fast F2 maximum aperture at wideangle, and a multi-functional control dial around the lens. But while its successor, the S100, looks much the same again on the outside, it is to all intents and purposes a brand new camera.
An update to the popular S90 model offering additional aspect ratios, 720p HD video recording and SDXC compatibility.Canon's PowerShot S95 replaces the PowerShot S90, which was announced in August 2009 to immediate success. Claimed as the smallest, slimmest digicam with advanced manual control and raw file support, the S95 comes with improved handling, additional manual controls, 720p HD movie capabilities and Canon's HS System (high-sensitivity CCD plus DiG!C 4 processing) and a more powerful Hybrid IS stabilisation system.

The brand new Canon PowerShot S95 compact camera is the more refined successor of last year's S90 model, additionally offering 720p HD video, Hybrid IS technology and in-camera HDR shooting. The same innovative lens control ring, 10 megapixel CCD sensor, fast f/2.0, 3.8x zoom, RAW file support, full range of manual shooting modes, and a 3 inch LCD are all present and correct on the S95. The launch price has also been reduced, making the Canon S95 an even more attractive proposition as a pocketable yet very capable compact. Read our in-depth Canon PowerShot S95 review now.
