A budget projector for first-person shooter fans
This bright projector aimed at gamers nails its niche admirably, but outside that role it stumbles.
BenQ's new projector treats gamers pretty well, but John Archer isn't convinced it's for movie lovers too Video gaming is currently enjoying the sort of explosion in popularity that home cinema did in the 1980s. Sales of the latest Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles are truly mind-boggling (despite ongoing supply issues). It's no surprise, then, to see makers of traditionally AV gear suddenly falling over themselves to cater for the gaming market. BenQ's new TH685 projector is a perfect case in point.
The BenQ TH685i DLP gaming projector is an updated version of the TH685 released in 2020 that includes the QS01 Android TV streaming stick. It still has the TH685's excellent input lag and good color accuracy for its price.
The BenQ TH685 is a solid 1080p choice for gaming or for viewing movies or video even in a room with ambient light. The package of good color accuracy and contrast, fast input lag, high brightness, and support for HLG and 4K input is especially appealing at this affordable price.
There are a bunch of junk projectors under $1,000 with minimal light output and atrocious color. But with enough brightness for high-ambient light conditions and pretty good color accuracy, the BenQ TH685 is not one of those projectors.
