Sony's latest Single Lens Transparent ('SLT') camera - the Alpha A55 - adds GPS and a super-fast 10fps burst rate. Is the Sony A55 the dawn of a new digital camera revolution?
Sony's taken a risk with the Alpha SLT-A55 camera, but it's paid off. The A55's innovative translucent-mirror technology makes for a blisteringly quick snapper that delivers excellent results.
The A55 may look like just another addition to the Alpha SLR range, but inside there are big changes afoot. Instead of using a flip-up mirror to direct light either to the optical viewfinder or the sensor, it uses
The Sony A55 is a new kind of interchangeable lens camera, removing the optical viewfinder and moving mirror of a DSLR and replacing them with an electronic viewfinder and a fixed semi-translucent mirror. This combination allows the A55 to be smaller, lighter, faster and offer a better Live View experience than a comparably priced DSLR. Read our Sony A55 Review to find out if this is the future of interchangeable lens cameras...
Sony SLT-A35 vs Sony SLT-A55 vs Sony SLT-A33, Features Comparison: Sony SLT-A35 Sony SLT-A55 Sony SLT-A33 Sensor new 16MP CM

No, that’s not a typo—the “T” in the acronym refers to the new mirror system in the Sony alpha a55 and stands for “translucent.” This setup, available in this camera and the new alpha a33, uses a fixed mirror system with a “half translucent mirror” that does not flip up during exposure. It allows for a continuous electronic viewfinder (EVF) signal and usage of a standard SLR AF system with an additional AF sensor. The units create yet another camera class, sort of half EVF, single lens (what we call a Compact System Camera, or CSC) and half standard SLR.
A capable and compact DSLR camera with some interesting and useful shooting modes and Full HD video recording. In Sony's about-to-be-released 16.2-megapixel SLT-A55V (which will be known as the A55) DSLR camera, the traditional SLR mirror is replaced with a semi-transparent pellicle mirror that is fixed in place instead of flipping up and down with each exposure. This Translucent Mirror Technology (TMT) technology underpins the new camera's fast TTL focusing and high burst speeds and makes the new models smaller and lighter than previous models in the Alpha.
Sony's latest interchangeable lens cameras, the SLT Alpha A33 and A55 represent a significant technological milestone - not just for Sony but for the enthusiast camera market as a whole.
It’s been a great year for the DSLR. Not only have we seen the top models capture stills of amazing quality, leading to many serious workers questioning the need for medium format digital capture … and then, to many an amazed onlooker, we’ve seen TV series and feature films shot with high end stills cameras.
The Sony A55 is the next big step for Sony, which busted onto the scene with the A300 and A350 DSLRs almost 3 years go with their fast live view autofocus. The A55’s live view autofocus is a…
