It was way back in August 2005 that Canon launched the last in the line of its S-Series compact photographers' cameras, the S80. And though you can see traces of the S60/S70/S80's DNA in the S90 it is a very different beast to those cameras; the S90 is smaller, sleeker - and in many ways more sophisticated, but it's lost the optical viewfinder and the lack of anything to really get hold of will undoubtedly impact on handling.
My first real camera was a Canon S50. I loved it. Canon let the pro compact S line die a few years later. It's back with the S90, though the only thing that's the same is that it's still awesome.
In the hand the S90 is an absolute delight, the Control Ring flirting with the playful side of photography, putting controls literally at your
The Canon S80 is one of the best compact digital cameras on the market, but you're going to have to dig deep to afford it.
The 8MP Canon PowerShot S80 is the latest iteration of the company's "Goldilocks" cameras. It's not a simple point-and-shoot digicam neither is it as complicated as a D-SLR.
Features and functionality in a compact, well built, high resolution camera, although a few enthusiast functions are limited or absent. For a compact digicam, Canon's elegant PowerShot S80 provides lots of user-adjustable controls. Although not strictly shirt-pocketable, the S80 is slim enough to slip into a jacket pocket or purse and its retracting 3.6x zoom lens is well protected behind the sliding lens cover/on-off switch. Its sturdy metal body contains an 8-megapixel CCD sensor plus Canon's DiG!C II image processor and excellent ergonomics make the S80 a satisfying camera to use.
The new Canon PowerShot S90 compact camera offers a lot of DSLR functionality in a pocketable format. Support for the RAW format, full range of manual shooting modes, and a fast f/2.0 lens should grab any keen photographer's attention, especially as the Canon S90 can easily slip inside a shirt pocket. This seemingly winning combination of size and features doesn't come cheap though - £449.00 / €519.00 / $429.99 is an awful lot to ask for what is after all still a camera with a tiny image sensor. Just over a year after the launch of the 7 megapixel PowerShot S70 Canon revealed its replacement, the new S80, which boasts a slight redesign, an extra million pixels and a few new features - including the latest DIGIC II processor. The S80 is smaller and lighter than the S70 yet it packs a much larger (2.5") wide viewing angle LCD monitor, a control wheel / 4-way controller, XGA video capture (15 fps), USB 2.0 High-speed and SD/MMC storage. Some may, however, be a little disappointed to hear that RAW capture has been dropped.

Although it's quite bulky, the S80 offers an excellent list of features for a compact digital camera.
The Canon PowerShot S90 is a 10MP point and shoot camera, but it’s more than just another compact camera. It symbolizes a return of the popular Sxx-series of cameras. It boils down to a G11…
Here are the best point-and-shoot cameras, super-zoom, travel, and instant cameras that kids and adults will love.
Review posted 12/10/2009Canon's PowerShot S90 is an ultra-compact digicam that is designed for the photo enthusiast who is looking for a pocketable camera to add to their ranks, which still offers a great deal of the exposure control they are accustomed to on their dSLR. This model is somewhat of a cross-breed
