Retro styling and a high-performance lens will attract traditionalists to this capable DSLR camera. In its new Digilux 3 DSLR, Leica has once again partnered with Panasonic to produce a digital camera with a body design that's reminiscent of Leica's rangefinder cameras but with electronics that are purely Panasonic. However, this time, the liaison between Olympus and Panasonic has also contributed to the new camera's design and functionality. The image sensor appears to be the same 4/3 type Live MOS chip that was developed by Panasonic and first used in the Olympus E-330.

On 1st December 2003 Leica announced the all new Digilux 2 digital camera. The five megapixel Digilux 2 has a unique 'retro' design and style with an all metal case and rubber coating which look more like an analogue film camera of the 1970's. The quality 28 - 90 mm equiv. F2.0 - F2.4 Leica lens has the appearance of a removable 35 mm lens (although it is fixed to the camera body). The controls have a tactile response and have been cleverly designed to be used in a fully automatic position or an immediate manual setting.

A beautifully crafted metal body and M-System styling make Leica's Digilux 2 stand out from competing cameras - as does its high price tag. Unlike many high-end digicams, where zoom, aperture and focus are accessed via lever/rocker switches or menu settings, on the Digilux 2, these settings are the same as on a film camera. Metering options (centre-weighted, multi-field and spot) are selected via a ring surrounding the shutter button. Click-stops minimise the risk of accidental setting changes. The DC Vario-Summicron lens is big, very fast and distortion-free and its aperture range is much wider than most digicams provide.
