Will Pentax's newest attempt at challenging its rivals, Canon and Nikon, work? Rod Lawton introduces us to the 10-megapixel K-m, a digital camera designed specifically with beginners in mind. The K-m proves to be a sturdy, practical, straightforward and extremely likeable camera that produces depth and richness in its photos
This is a lot of camera for the money.
A compact, entry-level DSLR with straightforward controls and plenty of novel features to satisfy more adventurous photographers.Pentax has used many features from last year's K200D as the basis of its new K-m DSLR. The sensors, viewfinders and LCD screens in both cameras are the same. However, the K-m is pitched more at first-time DSLR owners. It's as easy to use as an advanced digicam and offers some novel functions - including a swag of digital filters. But some features have been downgraded from its predecessor.
Expert reviews of all the latest cameras, lenses, smartphones and accessories, since 2003.
The fastest-growing part of the camera market is currently being powered by photographers moving from compact cameras to DSLRs. Unfortunately for manufacturers, the added competition this has attracted has seen the prices they can charge being eroded (although it could be argued that the lower prices are spurring some of that growth). Rather than trying to slash the prices on their existing, highly-featured cameras, there has been a trend towards designing simplified cameras that can be made and sold more cheaply, offering only the features that first-time DSLR users will want without appearing too intimidating.
Pentax K-m with DA L 18-55mm lens:
The camera continues the Pentax style of no-nonsense SLRs and there are no gimmicky concessions to customers moving up from compact cameras.
A simple digital SLR camera for beginners.

Yes, I love my KX because it’s my first—but I also love it because it’s a great camera, and one I freely recommend to anyone who will listen.
At just £287 (£330 inc VAT), the K-m is one of the cheapest digital SLRs on the market, but that doesn't mean it's missing features. Resolution-wise, at 10.2-megapixels it's on a par with
