It was Hamish’s piece on the Plaubel Makina and Agfa 1035 that finally pushed me into typing my thoughts about a camera with a not dissimilar design ethos. I hope it doesn’t trouble any readers to discover it is a digital camera that wasn’t particularly successful and belongs to a camera line that is now discontinued.
With compact lenses and a sturdy body, the Nikon 1 V1 should last you a lifetime. That's just as well as it doesn't come cheap.
Nikon 1 V1 is a 10.0MP Entry-Level Mirrorless camera with a 1-inch sized CMOS sensor and Nikon 1 mount. Read our 1 V1 review to find its pros and cons.
Nikon's entry into the mirrorless interchangeable lens market late last year was widely anticipated, but the products that were finally announced took a lot of people by surprise. Nikon has created an entirely new system based around a relatively small sensor, that's about 30% of the size of those used in the company's DX-format SLRs. The system is spearheaded by two cameras - the Nikon 1 J1 and 1 V1. The J1 is the entry-level model, and the V1 is aimed at a slightly more advanced user, but both cameras are intended essentially for beginners upgrading from compact cameras or cameraphones, and who find the size and complexity of a DSLR intimidating.

I am by no means a professional photographer. Although, just to get in the more closely guarded press event, I have been known to slap an old 500 series

The Nikon V1 is priced like a high-end mirrorless camera and delivers solid performance, but doesn't offer the level of controls or lens options that demanding photographers require.

A compact system camera with a 2.7x crop factor, hybrid AF system and Full HD movie recording. The Nikon 1 V1 is the higher-specified model of two cameras introduced as a new interchangeable-lens digital camera system on 21 September, 2011. Based on a relatively small sensor (see below), these cameras have been designed for snapshooters who want better image quality than a small-sensor digicam provides but would never consider buying a DSLR. (They probably wouldn't invest in additional lenses, either.)
The Nikon 1 V1 is the company's long-awaited entry into the rapidly growing compact system camera market. Based around the brand new "CX" format sensor, the Nikon V1 is all about speed, with fast auto-focusing and up to 60fps continuous shooting. The V1 also offers an electronic viewfinder, 3 inch LCD screen, full HD video, and a range of innovative modes like Smart Photo Selector and Motion Snapshot Mode. Can the Nikon V1 successfully carry on the long tradition of the company's DSLRs? Read our in-depth Nikon 1 V1 review to find out...
