Leica's top-end compact gets a resolution boost
This morning has seen a flurry of news: the M9 Monochrom first (with a useable ISO 10,000 apparently!), then the Hermes M9-P, the 50/2 APO-Summicron-ASPH (ouch what a price tag), and trailing, the …
Leica X2 is a 16.0MP Large Sensor Compact camera with a APS-C sized CMOS sensor and 36 mm F2.8 lens. Read our X2 review to find its pros and cons.
The Leica X2 is a large-sensor compact camera with a sharp lens and a classic control interface, but it doesn't excel in low light.
Is the most expensive compact camera money can buy worth the asking price? We find out in the What Digital Camera Leica X2 review
The X1 had been a pretty revolutionary idea when Leica released it alongside the M9 on 9/9/9 three years ago. Forgoing the smaller micro 4/3 sensor format, Leica went larger, opting for an SLR-sized APS-C 12MP CMOS sensor. The decision resulted in excellent image quality, even at high ISO. In fact, the X1’s imaging performance rivaled that of much larger DSLR cameras, yet it was smaller than many 4/3 cameras. This seemed to be the overriding theme for Leica in 2009: put the largest image sensors in the smallest camera bodies. The M9 was (and still is) the smallest full frame 35mm camera, the S2 was (and still is) the smallest medium format DSLR, and the X1 was the smallest APS sized camera. In the past, Leica had partnered with Japanese camera makers for compact digital cameras. The first collaboration was with Fuji for the original Digilux, a 1.3 megapixel camera introduced in 1998, then again for the Digilux Zoom and finally, the Digilux 4.3 in 2000. Starting in 2002, with the launch of the Digilux 1, Leica has been working closely with Panasonic on digital compact cameras. And while the fruit of this partnership has yielded some really good cameras like the D-Lux and V-Lux lines, many wanted a compact camera that felt more like a sized-down M camera, with simple controls and the best available image quality – a “pure” Leica. So, around 2008, Leica endeavored to do just that.

The Leica X2 is a pocket camera for professionals, offering a 16 megapixel APS-C sensor, fast f/2.8, 36mm lens, improved autofocusing and the usual superlative Leica handling and build quality. Is that enough to justify the Leica X2's £1575 / $1995 price tag? Read our in-depth Leica X2 review to find out...

The X2 improves upon its predecessor and is a great, stylised statement camera. The fixed lens (36mm in full-frame terms) won’t suit all, but for
