Do you ever get the feeling you’re being played by the camera manufacturers? Sony appears to have no shame in regularly drip feeding its technology to consumers, eager for the next best thing in image quality. If you don’t mind your hot new camera becoming a dinosaur six months after you buy it, Sony is the […]
Over the past two years, it would appear Sony’s internal motto has been to “Turn Heads,” having released one fantastic camera after
Publishers Note: A few weeks ago I was in conversation with Michael Tapes about the NEW Sony A7R II camera and the dynamic range that this new camera and sensor is capable of – especially when compared to other popular DSLR cameras. If any of you know Michael, you will know he is a very [Read More]
Sony’s Industry Challenger The Sony A7RII was announced in June and started shipping world-wide in early August, 2015. The product’s highlights are likely well known by now, even though shipments have just started. But, at the risk of repetition, here are the main points again… – 35 mm full-frame back-illuminated 42.4-Megapixel CMOS sensor – [Read More]
The Sony a7R II is a 42MP full frame mirrorless camera with 5-axis image stabilization, featuring the world's first (and currently only) 35mm BSI CMOS sensor, and including a hybrid autofocus system and 4K video capabilities. It's the fifth in the company's a7 range of full frame cameras and the second high-resolution 'R' model. However, although its name and appearance are very similar to the first round of a7s, the R II arguably represents just as significant a step forwards as those first full frame mirrorless models did.
Building on the success of the full-frame 36-Mpix Sony A7R, the recently announced update to that model looks to be one of the most promising cameras of the year. Along with a slight increase in pixel count over the original, the sensor in the 42-Mpix A7R II offers BSI architecture and on-chip PDAF with 399 points. Read on to find out how well this new sensor performs.
No other camera category has seen as much innovation and novelty as the mirrorless market over the past several years, and the latest crop of models are a testament to that. They’re driving forward not only new features but more compact designs targeted at filmmakers just as much as photographers. Here are some of our recent favorites. RICOH PENTAX QS-1...
Sony's Alpha series of Interchangeable Lens Cameras has a new flagship model for 2015. The Alpha 7R II (model ILCE-7RM2) boasts the world's first back-illuminated full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor, with 42.4 megapixels. It also features the BIONZ X image processor as well as a Fast Hybrid AF system
The finest camera Sony has ever made
Sony has been one of the earliest camera manufacturers out there that moved from the traditional DSLR camera that uses mirror/prism to the now-popular mirrorless system. They started well with the Alpha SLT A55 and A33 six years ago, showing the world that a mirrorless camera can be as good as a traditional […]
Comparing the cameras in Sony's a7 full-frame interchangeable lens mirrorless camera series can be confusing. For one thing, the models have similar names like a7 II, a7S and a7R. Each of the models also has its own strengths. The latest Sony a7R II still sounds a mouthful. But it could clear up the confusion by being the only mirrorless camera...
If you’ve been using a digital SLR for the last couple of years, you might not have realised just how advanced new cameras have become. And Sony’s a7R Mark II is just about the most advanced of them all — apart from one small but surprisingly annoying issue, it’s just...
Sony has announced the a7R II, a 42.4MP mirrorless camera with an image stabilized full-frame BSI CMOS sensor. Unlike its predecessor, the camera includes on-sensor phase detection elements for faster autofocus, which continues to work with other brands' lenses. The camera also has a revised shutter mechanism, rated to 500,000 actuations but also promising less vibration than the one on its predecessor. Click through for full details
The Sony Alpha 7R II has been the topic of much discussion and in our office, much testing. We've published a number of articles with results of our tests, picking apart Raw files from its 42MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor and pushing its 399 on-sensor phase detect AF points to their limits. This first impressions review is the culmination of that work to date, including an in-depth analysis of the camera's image quality and the effects of shutter shock. Read more
