Nikon's flagship DX-format DSLR adds D-Movie capabilities and dual card slots to the feature set of the D300.Depending on how you rate the addition of video capture and dual card slots, Nikon's D300S can be rated as either a major or minor upgrade to the D300. Aside from these features, little has changed from the earlier model. The sensor is the same DX-format 12.3 megapixel (effective) chip and both models include Nikon's latest EXPEED image processor which is the same as in the D90 (the first DSLR to offer HD video recording).

When Nikon launched the all-new entry-level D3000, they took the time to freshen the D300 with—what else—video capability, adding the “s” suffix, as is their naming habit. The camera appears parked between Canon’s EOS 5D and 50D models and, with the addition of video capture, places it head-to-head with the new EOS 7D. As I write this, some dealers are offering “special” lower prices on the D300, so bargain hunters who don’t want or need video capture…

The Nikon D300 made quite an impact when it was first launched - enough to prompt us to conclude: 'There's simply no better semi-professional digital SLR on the market.' And, in many respects, it is still the camera to beat in that class - nearly two years later and it is still able to command essentially the same price as at launch (though the strong Yen has pushed all prices up). And this success appears to have left Nikon unsure how to improve on its APS-C flagship.
