Sony Alpha DSLR-A700 Review

It's been almost two years since Konica Minolta pulled out of the photo business and transferred its entire camera division to Sony, and well over a year since the first Sony DSLR (the DSLR-A100) was announced. Two years is a long time in the digital SLR market, but the three years Minolta (latterly Konica Minolta, now Sony) SLR users have been waiting for a high end model to replace the innovative Maxxum (Dynax) 7D must have felt like a lifetime. But, finally, it's here, and it looks very much like the mockup shown earlier in the year.

DxOMark review for the Sony Alpha 700

The Sony Alpha 700 with its new version 4.0 firmware scored a 66.3 on the DxOMark Sensor scale, putting it in 17th place on the dxomark.com overall ranking, and in 5th place for APS-C cameras. Given its launch date (Sept. 2007), this is a pretty good result.

A well-built DSLR for serious photo enthusiasts, which offers excellent imaging performance and a wide range of adjustable controls.Sony's long-awaited second DSLR, the Alpha A700 features a larger, tougher body and a new Exmor-branded CMOS sensor with 12.24-megapixel resolution. Noticeably larger and roughly 150 grams heavier than Sony's first DSLR model (the A100), it is targeted at serious enthusiast photographers and boasts a faster image processor, improved dust and moisture resistance, a larger LCD monitor and a brighter viewfinder.

Sony’s Alpha A700; A Remarkably Fast 12-Megapixel D-SLR

When Sony introduced the A100 in June 2006, the company made a commitment to develop the Alpha system to include a full line of products. Since then, many Sony and Carl Zeiss ZA T* series lenses have been released, and now, the second camera is available. (A third D-SLR, targeting professionals, will be announced in 2008.) The new A700 maintains compatibility with Maxxum as well as Sony AF lenses, but this new 12-megapixel Alpha model is entirely different than the A100 in most other respects. A "prosumer"-level model, it provides
