Sigma DP1; A Compact “Full Spec” Camera

A funny thing happened to me while I was shooting and reviewing the new Sigma DP1 compact camera in New Mexico. I had taken a lunch break in a local taqueria and in came a couple that sat down at the next table. Next to the guy's backpack and hat he set down the Sigma DP1. I did a double take, and asked him how he liked it. "Great," he said, "the picture quality is terrific, although it does make you think."

Sigma DP1 Review

The Sigma DP1 is without doubt one of the most eagerly anticipated cameras of late, certainly in the compact camera sector. Sigma first presented a concept prototype of the DP1 at Photokina 2006 but the first production models only hit the shelves in March this year. Interest in the camera was so big that Sigma even took the very unusual step of explaining the delay in an official statement (unforeseen image quality problems which resulted in a requirement to change the specification of the camera's imaging pipeline).

The Sigma DP1s is the newest member of Sigma's big-sensor, small camera family, offering a 14 megapixel APS-C imager more typically found in DSLR cameras. Offering a 28mm fixed focal lens, manual shooting modes and RAW format support, providing DSLR image quality in a compact camera is clearly the DP1s' main aim. Successor to the DP1 model, the Sigma DP1s offers a few key enhancements to the original design. Read our expert Sigma DP1s review to find out if this is the pocket camera that every keen photographer has been waiting for.

The first compact digital camera with a relatively large image sensor. We've been waiting for Sigma's DP-1 digital camera for approximately 18 months. First announced at Photokina in September 2006, it has been withheld from the market through what Sigma describes as "unforeseen image quality problems which resulted in a requirement to change the specification of the camera's imaging pipeline". But it's here now - and a very interesting camera it has turned out to be.

The DP1 is the companion camera to Sigma's SD14. It uses the same unique three-layer Foveon sensor, but this time in a compact body with a fixed focal-length lens.
