I love seeing weird and quirky lenses and this one from Samyang certainly ticks those boxes. Is it any good though? The Samyang 300mm f/6.3 ED UMC CS is a mirror lens for APS-C mirrorless Canon or Sony cameras. I've never used one personally, though many mirror lenses do exist and their correct name is "catadioptric" lenses. I'm going to just directly quote a Wikipedia page for a summary: A catadioptric optical system is one where refraction and reflection are combined in an optical system, usually via lenses (dioptrics) and curved mirrors (catoptrics).Read more

Pros

  • Build quality appears to be very good for the asking price
  • make it easy to shoot compelling lifestyle images
  • solid and well-built
  • incredibly light
  • but feels surprisingly well built
  • image quality is pretty good in my opinion
  • It also helps you to maintain 3 points of contact for stability

Cons

  • VERY touchy to focus
  • some of which Frost points out in the video
  • The contrast could be helped a bit during development and printing
  • The focusing can be a bit tricky
  • slight vignetting caused by the lens design
  • Colour rendition will also be slightly subdued
  • Rectilinear distortion is seldom an issue with these lenses
  • focusing can be difficult in dim lighting on cameras with optical viewfinders
  • be significantly larger and heavier and much more expensive
  • Color Rendering Colors are muted at best
  • Filter thread size is NOT specified in the lens manual

Samyang have launched a new 300mm reflex or mirror lens with a fixed f/6.3 aperture. With a previous version of the lens only available for mirrorless cameras, the new version is designed for Digital SLRs featuring an APS-C sensor and comes in Canon, Nikon, Sony & Four Thirds lens mounts.
