The Ricoh GR II has an APS-C sensor, a bright prime lens and Wi-Fi: Is it the perfect street shooter? Find out in our Ricoh GR II review!
Is this the compact camera that enthusiasts have been waiting for?
I’ve shot with all the cameras in the world, and I can easily say that the RICOH GR II is the best camera for street photography. Why? Let me explain:
Our dreams of the perfect, barebones camera come a step closer to being answered. Ricoh’s GR Digital II has been fully tested at the Photography Blog and the conclusion is that, while there are flaws, it delivers great pictures and is a joy to use.
Ricoh today announced the successor to its GR Digital premium compact. The Ricoh GR Digital II carries over the well-received 28mm equiv. lens from its predecessor, matching it to a new 10 megapixel sensor and new GR Engine II image processing system. For those of us with one leg longer than the other there is a new electronic leveling system à la Nikon D3 and the option to shoot TLR-style square images. Performance is said to be improved with a larger buffer memory and halved RAW file-write time with the option of continuous shooting. Battery life is also said to have come on leaps and bounds with up to 370 shots now possible on a charge - the original gave up after 250. The Ricoh GR Digital II will cost £399.99 when it hits UK shops in December.
The new Ricoh GR II is a discreet compact camera with a fixed focal length 28mm wide-angle lens, 16 megapixel APS-C sensor, high-res 3 inch LCD screen, flash hotshoe and pop-up flash, built-in wifi/NFC connectivity, a wealth of customisable controls and a fast auto-focus system. Read our in-depth Ricoh GR II review complete with full-size image samples (JPEG and Raw) to find out if it can improve on its popular predecessor...
Ricoh GR Digital II
A slim and lightweight wide-angle digicam with features and performance to attract serious photo enthusiasts.A successor to the award-winning GR Digital, which was released in October 2005, Ricoh's GR Digital II offers higher resolution and a new GR Engine II image processor but otherwise retains most of the features that made its predecessor popular with photo enthusiasts. Superficially, the diecast magnesium bodies of both cameras are almost identical, but the new model sports a slightly larger LCD.
The fixed lens camera market may be a bit niche, but it's here that you'll find some of the best cameras you can buy. Sensors ranging from APS-C to full-frame are designed to match their lenses, which cover ranges from 28-75mm equivalent, so image quality is top-notch.
I started my photography journey as a street photographer, before becoming a photojournalist. As fate would have it, I have long since traded my camera for a laptop as a technology journalist. Read more at straitstimes.com.

As a high-end compact with the focus on portability and high image quality, the original Ricoh GR was a highly-regarded model. Adding Wi-Fi connectivity, improved buffering, and extended battery life to the original’s GR 28mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens in front of a relatively large APS-C type 16-Mpix CMOS sensor, the Ricoh GR II is a relatively modest update. Read on to find out how well this new camera performs.
When applied to humans, the word “character” has two distinct meanings, an oddball or eccentric as in “Fred is a real character” or a morally upstanding person, as in “Charlie is a man of unimpeachable character.” When it comes to machines created by humans, the word “character” conveys a slightly different constellation of meanings, hovering somewhere between “having lovable defects” like an old Model T Ford, and expressing a distinctive personality, like a classic Ferrari.
I started my photography journey as a street photographer, before becoming a photojournalist. As fate would have it, I have long since traded my camera for a laptop as a technology journalist. But I still love to just roam the streets and take pictures. This is even more so with the new Ricoh GR II in hand. This unassuming-looking and...
