What games can the 2DS not play?
    shirley.wilkinson
All 3DS games work on 2DS systems with the exception of a few that are labeled “Only for NEW Nintendo 3DS XL”, like Xenoblade Chronicles or Binding of Isaac. If you get a New 2DS XL, all games WILL work. Also, the 3D functionality doesn't work on 2DS systems, obviously.

    Is 2DS still supported?
    jacinto
The Nintendo 2DS was discontinued in Japan in 2019 and in the rest of the world in 2020, along with the other systems in the Nintendo 3DS family.

Why 2DS is better than 3DS?
    alden
There is a benefit to the flat construction of the 2DS other than keeping costs down. It makes the handheld console much less easy to destroy – the hinge of the 3DS and 3DS XL is an obvious point where they could fail. That's not to say that the 2DS is better constructed than its more expensive brothers, though.

What is the point of a 2DS?
    malinda_sawayn
The entire point of the design of the 2DS is to make a sturdy but cheap-to-manufacture console that the company can sell in the Western mass market to kids (and, critically, their parents.)

    Is the Nintendo 2DS durable?
    winston
It's highly plastic design doesn't feel necessarily all that refined, and my 3DS XL definitely comes off as a more “premium” device, but the 2DS feels durable and well-built.

Nintendo 2DS review: Nothing to Laugh At

The Nintendo 2DS is a relatively curious device: A handheld stripped of the bells and whistles of its powerhouse brother, the 3DS, with a super affordable price tag attached. Our own Joey Davidson didn't think much of the device when it was originally announced, writing he felt like it was a Pokémon machine made only for kids; however, I've been using the 2DS for the past week, and...

Nintendo 2DS Review: Back To Basics Proves Brilliant For Mobile Console Gaming

Nintendo has a rhythm that's predictable when it comes to product releases: Create a new console, then create different iterations of those consoles with upgrades aimed at expanding market share in clever ways. The new Nintendo 2DS is no exception to that rule, but it is remarkable in that it's a b…

New Nintendo 2DS XL: The Kotaku Review

If you don’t care about 3D anymore—and even Nintendo’s interest in it seems to be fading—then the New Nintendo 2DS XL is the absolute best model in Nintendo’s line of portable gaming hardware. It’s a shame the company makes adding new devices such a burden.

Nintendo's $130 2DS might not be your ideal do-it-all gaming handheld, but if you have a young kid or a tight budget, it's your best choice.

The 2DS is a great "starter console" for young gamers. And -- in the US, at least -- it's more affordable than ever.
