Consumer-level DSLRs such as the Canon 400D (web ID: 97741) and Nikon D40x (web ID: 117800) offer an excellent route into serious digital photography but, after a certain amount of time, users are likely to outgrow their entry-level

The Nikon D300s is the latest camera to join the growing ranks of DSLRs that can shoot HD video. Heavily based on the previous D300 model, the 12 megapixel, DX-format D300S adds a continuous shooting speed of 7fps, dual CF and SD memory card slots and a new Quiet drive mode. With camera prices escalating in recent months, the Nikon D300s will set you back £1499.99 / €1821.00 / $1799.95 body only. Zoltan Arva-Toth finds out if the D300s is worth considering...

Big, heavy and laden with features, Nikon’s 12.3-megapixel D300 is also the best digi-SLR for under three grand we’ve seen yet. All told, it comes as close to the highest-end Nikons or Canons on the market for thousands less. The three-inch LCD is the sharpest, clearest monitor on the market and the 51-point focusing system, […]

Nikon D300 In-depth Review

Just under two years since the D200 Nikon reveals the D300, the range of changes is so significant that it wouldn't be inappropriate to call it a 'compact D3' (less the full-frame sensor of course). From the top there's a new CMOS sensor with twelve megapixels, a new auto-focus sensor with 51-points (15 of which are cross-type sensitive), there's focus tracking by color, scene recognition, Picture Control presets, six frames per second continuous shooting (or eight frames per second with a battery pack), Compact Flash UDMA support, Live View (with contrast detect AF) and the mighty impressive 3.0" 922,000 pixel LCD monitor (oh and HDMI video output). It's an impressive list, the D200 was a fair step up from the D100, the D300 can be seen as just as big a step, certainly more than enough to make the competition sweat.

Simply put, Nikon's D300 is one of the finest cameras on the market. Its image quality matches competing models, and while you pay a premium, you get such features as live view, dust reduction, D-Lighting and a bevy of others in return. Perfect for enthusiasts and professionals.

A well-built, thoughtfully-designed DSLR camera for serious enthusiasts and professional photographers.Nikon's new D300 DSLR camera slots in above the D200 'pro-sumer' model but does not replace it. Although five grams lighter, the new model has essentially the same sturdy body as the D200, with a magnesium alloy chassis and dust- and moisture-proof sealing. Its shutter unit is rated for 150,000 cycles, compared with 100,000 for the D200. Its sensor resolution is also higher at 12.3 megapixels.
