Pros

  • the lens is excellent at tracking movement
  • It is sturdy
  • can be easily handheld for long periods of time
  • great value and a great lens
  • Excellent budget solution to bird photography
  • It is also great for macro shots
  • Sharpness is excellent from f4 and only gets marginally better at
  • a solid tripod and use of MLU
  • the advantage of 1 step more light and a beautiful bokeh
  • Sharp
  • quick and quiet

Cons

  • Nikon does not offer an AF-S 400mm f/5
  • lack of the back element on this lens
  • dust and other debris could end up in your camera and your lens
  • too slow to focus
  • doesn't have large dust particles visible from the front element
  • No Chromatic Aberration or Color fringing
  • tripod collar and foot are simply flimsy
  • IF-ED does not have VR
  • it does not feature any dust or moisture seals
  • The collar is a little on the stiff side when rotating
