Nikkor AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR (FX) Review
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR is a new standard zoom lens that can be used with both full-frame FX and cropped DX Nikon DSLR cameras. Featuring a constant maximum aperture of f/3.5, the Nikon 24-85mm is an affordable partner for new DSLRs like the D800 and D600. Looking for a Nikon 24-85mm lens review? Read on to find out what we uncovered in our objective optical lab tests.
A reasonably compact, competitively-priced, stabilised lens that covers a popular zoom range for owners of Nikon's FX cameras.
The Nikon D600 came with a kit lens: the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S VR. The specs of the lens looked promising on paper but very reminiscent to a much older lens that also used to come with film cameras. Unfortunately, this lens was a disappointment. New gear is not always the best. I wish I could hold this lens in the same regard as the Nikon 50mm f1.8 G and 85mm f1.8 G. I mention those lenses because the build quality of the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED AF-S VR, at first, reminded me of them. However, when I used it, I felt it was slightly pitiful; it was not as fast focusing as I felt it should be when coming with a camera like the Nikon D600.
Most manufacturers have a lens that gets bundled with their cameras to make a ‘Kit’, and Nikon is no exception, but when its full frame cameras are beginning to be accessible to the consumer market, the kit lens needs both coverage and quality to be an appropriate partner to the likes of a Nikon D600.
Is Nikon attempting to ease the passage of enthusiasts into its professional DSLR system with its new budget full-frame lens? We find out whether the 24-85mm does justice to the cameras. Read the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR review...
