The earlier Gear S smartwatch was only IP67-certified, which means it is only rated to a shallower water depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. For all intents and purposes though, both the Gear S and the newer Gear S2 are “waterproof” enough for you to wear them when you take a bath, swim or even go snorkelling.

So far, there's no news of Samsung ending support for the Gear S2 or Gear S3 smartwatches. However, this is the first time Samsung is pulling the plug completely on older wearables. It's reasonable to expect that the company's other watches may eventually follow suit.

Update: The Samsung Gear S2 is still a fine choice if you're an Android user, but there are a few reasons that you may want to consider the Samsung Gear S3. The Gear S3 features a larger battery, has GPS built-in and offers a bit more RAM than the Gear S2.
