Review: Casio EX-G1 rugged digital camera

Short version: The coolest-looking and slimmest camera in our roundup may also be your best bet. If only it had better video, the EX-G1 would be the best choice by far. As it is, it still gets my recommendation. Features: 12.1 megapixels 3x optical zoom Waterproof (3m/10ft), shockproof (7ft), dustproof (dust) Slim design MSRP: $300

The EX-G1 is the first all-action water, dust, shock and freeze -proof camera from Casio, branded with the company's famous G-Shock moniker. This is also the slimmest tough camera in the world, and also beautifully styled and made. The EXG1 is up against some tough competition though, with Olympus very well-established, Panasonic making a recent splash, and Pentax offering some worthy budget alternatives. Read our Casio EX-G1 review to find out it can out-muscle the competition.

Casio's Exilim G EX-G1 camera made a solid enough first impression with us when we got our hands on it in January, but we've now had a chance to use it a fair bit more both indoors and out, and reach some firmer conclusions about it.

Extremely compact for a rugged, waterproof camera, but in virtually all other respects, it’s a disappointment.

The Casio EX-G1 may look marginally cooler than an Olympus Mju Tough or Panasonic Lumix, but they, along with the uglier Canon D10, take better photos
