The Canon Powershot SX100 IS is the first camera in the brand new SX ultra-zoom series, offering a 10x zoom, image stabilized lens covering the 36-360mm focal length and an 8 megapixel image sensor. Other standout features of the Canon SX100 IS inclu...
The PowerShot SX100 IS is the first model in Canon's new SX series of budget super zoom compact cameras, and in the Powershot line-up slots in somewhere between the tried and tested A-Series and the more upmarket S5 IS. Canon's engineers combined the materials and build quality of the former with the long lens, some features and design of the latter to merge them into a brand new camera that goes head to head with Panasonic's popular TZ series (and the new Sony H3). The SX100 IS comes with a 8.0MP sensor, a 10x zoom, optical image stabilization and a comprehensive range of manual photographic controls, all nicely wrapped up in a compact silver or black plastic body. Canon says the SX series offers exceptional performance in the hands of any member of the family, so let's find out how it performed in our capable hands, starting, as ever, with the headline features.
Canon PowerShot SX100 IS
The SX100 sounds like a hot list for people in South East England, but is in fact a new bridge style camera from Canon. Matt "Sharon" Grayson puts on his white stilettos and affects a comedy John Wayne walk. Well, it is the weekend.
A low-priced, long-zoom digicam with features to appeal to travellers.Canon's PowerShot SX100 IS has many of the features of the popular S5 IS model but boasts a smaller, lighter body and significantly lower price tag. Boasting an 8-megapixel CCD imager and 10x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation, the SX100 IS sports the latest DiG!C III image processor, which includes Face Detection technology plus support for ISO 1600 sensitivity. The 2.5-inch LCD monitor is fixed and has 172,000-pixel resolution and the camera has obviously been designed to provide performance and functionality at an economy price.
It's not every day that Canon launches a new series of cameras. We take a look at the first "family camera".
Canon's new pocket 10x camera packs really cool features, but cuts a couple of important corners.
