Canon PowerShot G11

The Powershot G series has represented a fairly formidable presence at the top of the compact camera tree. From a keen photographer point-of-view, there's little on the market that can match its mixture of zoom range, lens flexibility, build quality and level of manual control. Somehow Ricoh's GX and Nikon's P series have never quite had the same impact but Panasonic's LX3 has been enough to tempt some potential customers away, with its bright lens and convincing (for a compact) low-light performance.

We had an all too brief hands-on with Canon's PowerShot G11 way back in August, but the first real flood of reviews has only just recently started, and now seemed like as good a time as any to get you caught up on some of them.

The PowerShot G11 is the latest version of Canon's compact camera range for prosumers and professionals, offering a DSLR experience in a pocketable body. Interestingly Canon have reduced the number of megapixels on the G11 in a bid to improve image quality at higher ISO speeds, and they've responded to customer feedback by re-introducing the vari-angle LCD that was missing on the previous G10 model. The latest model in the popular G-series of digicams for photo enthusiasts.Canon surprised many industry observers by replacing the 14-megapixel PowerShot G10 with the 10-megapixel G11 model. However, this move makes sense because image noise was an issue with the G10 at ISO 400 and most photographers should appreciate having fewer - but larger - photosites that deliver better image quality. Nevertheless, the sensor remains pretty small (7.6 x 5.7 mm) and, more surprisingly, the RRP has risen by $150 since the G10 was released.

We put the Canon PowerShot G11 through its paces in our review and realize that Canon is on a roll with its recent line of cameras with the G11 being no exception.

While the Canon G series remains the definitive compact camera range, the new G11 could have done more to impress.

It's fat. It's $500. It takes fantastic photographs.

The G11 is slightly bigger but otherwise looks remarkably similar to the G10. It shares the same DIGIC 4 Image Processor and 5x optical zoom lens, with an effective range equivalent to 28–140mm, supported by Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer.
