One of the nicest point and shoot digital cameras gets even better.
Announced just before PMA in February 2005, the PowerShot A520 is the replacement for the PowerShot A85, and continues the line of best-selling budget models that goes right back to early 2001 with the A10 and A20. The changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary; a reduction in size and weight (it's 13% smaller and 20% lighter), the inclusion of a new four times optical zoom lens (the A85 had a three times), zoom-linked flash, a shift from CompactFlash to SD card for storage and a drop to two AA batteries from four.
Steve's Conclusion The PowerShot A520 is the 4-megapixel big brother of Canon's A510 and logically the 2005 successor to the popular A85 that we reviewed in 2004. The A520 retains the A85's 4-megapixel resolution and family-friendly features, but offers a more powerful 4X optical zoom range, 35-140mm
Canon's new PowerShot A520 is smaller and roughly 70 grams lighter than the A85 model it replaces. Interestingly, it will sell for $499, the price at which the A85 was launched. Apart from some re-shuffling of control buttons on the back panel and two extra scene modes (Kids & Pets and Night Snapshot) their control suites are similar, although the A520 looks smarter and has better functionality.

The 4-megapixel PowerShot A520 offers a generous 4X zoom and many advanced controls for a low price.
