The Warning Note -Canon PowerShot G1 Review

In 2000 Film was King but Canon launched the PowerShot G1. A Prosumer Digital that should have sent warning bells. And it's still useable.

Anyone watching the emergence of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras will have spent much of the last year patiently waiting for Canon and Nikon to show their hands. Nikon clearly decided such cameras didn't need large sensors, and it appears Canon has concluded they don't need interchangeable lenses. Both these moves make sense for companies wanting dedicated photographers to keep buying DSLRs, but Canon's approach is likely to be of more interest to those enthusiasts.

Canon G1 Review

A departure from the norm? Not what was expected? A few sites have claimed the G1 is the "replacement for the Pro 70". I personally have other thoughts. The G1 is a direct competitor to Nikon's 990 and Olympus's C-3030Z, it has a completely different form-factor to the Pro 70 (it's more like the S range) and doesn't feature Canon's recently announced 10x optical zoom stabilised digital camera lens.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is the smallest zooming APS-C camera we've seen, but it feels like a step back from the Mark II.

For an advanced bridge camera, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III has a gentle learning curve but provides plenty of power for expanding your skills and creativity. Still, it could have more extras for the high price.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X is a serious compact camera with a large 1.5-inch image sensor. Building on previous G-series models, the G1 X also offers a 4x, 28-112mm zoom lens, 1080p HD video with stereo sound, 3 inch vari-angle screen, optical viewfinder and manual controls. £699 / €799 / $799.99 is a lot of money to pay for a fixed-lens compact camera - read our Canon PowerShot G1 X review to find out if it's worth it.
