Like Nikon's other consumer-level DSLRs, the D3100 has no in-body autofocus motor, and fully automatic autofocus requires one of the currently 162 lenses with an integrated autofocus-motor. With any other lens, the camera's electronic rangefinder can be used to manually adjust focus.

The Bottom Line. A very good entry-level dSLR, the Nikon D3100 delivers excellent photo quality in a body that's streamlined for experienced photographers, but relatively unintimidating for the less advanced. Its only weakness is performance; though solid, it nevertheless lags behind the competition.

No you can not, there is no mic input in the D3100, that would be in the D7000. You could though use an external recording device like the Zoom H4N and sync in post production, which instead of a mini mic input you get pro XLR with many other controls and features than what a camera would have.

Ever since the D40's debut in 2006, Nikon has been steadily releasing a cadre of entry-level basic DSLR cameras with attractively low prices. After the impressive D40 and D40x came the D3000, which introduced Guide mode for beginning DSLR users, but which also introduced high image noise. Can the D3100 do better than its predecessor?
