Looking for a Canon 17-40mm lens review? Read on to find out what we uncovered in our objective optical lab tests.
Although overshadowed by its more glamorous sibling, as a moderately priced, highly portable ultra-wide zoom, the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM is a hugely popular model. Read on to find out how well it performs in our labs.
The Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Lens is a staple for most photographers. I purchased mine about 10 years ago, and I am about to retire it. I am going to start off with the reason that I am retiring the lens first, rather than why I purchased it. I am certainly not going to be upgrading the lens. I simply don’t need it anymore, so although this is a lifetime review, this is actually the first time that I am retiring a lens rather than upgrading. My work simply no longer requires this lens as of this weekend.
The Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens is an inexpensive alternative to the 16-35mm f/2.8, but its edges are muddy at its widest angle.
The EF 17-40mm f/4L USM lens is a member of a suite of Canon zoom lenses that retain a constant f4 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range. Designed for use on 35mm SLR cameras, this ultra-wide zoom is ideal for capturing dramatic landscape shots and taking portraits of large groups of people. It will also prove useful for shooting in cramped interiors. [ia]
